MARK VAN MOURIK: Passages
"I first saw Mark at the Pocono Blues Festival as the guitarist behind Skeeter Brandon and Priscilla Price. I was amazed at the kid's soulful guitar work; it reminded me of the type of soul guitar approach you might hear a Steve Cropper play on the classic Stax recordings of the 1960's. Van Mourik's self produced debut has that same mixture of soul, rock, and blues. The opening tune, "Understand Me," is very reminiscent of a vintage Boz Skaggs' groove. Van Mourik's piercing guitar threads through the husky horn action. Dwell On" is another that deals in upbeat funk and soul. Van Mourik is smart enough to understand that blazing guitar only goes so far. Thus, his restraint on "Honestly" and "Train" allows him to showcase the blend of his
understanding vocals with knifelike guitar slashes. On the final song, "Why Not," Van Mourik and the band groove on a funk meets Latin jazz thing. Picture Tom Scott meets Weather Report. The conversation and negotiations between Van Mourik's guitar, Bob Sanger's keyboard work, and Seth Carper's tenor turns this jam into something I wish went on longer than it's five minutes."

We at Jovamo Records would like to present Mark van Mourik's new album "Passages." We feel sure you will really enjoy the great blues tunes included.
Mark is originally from Apeldoorn, Holland where he grew up in a house filled with blues lovers and he believes in keeping the blues alive. He began playing guitar as a small child while watching his father play and went on to play with several European bands. In 1995, Mark met Roy Roberts while he was touring in Europe and jumped on his offer to come to the United States to play and record blues with Roy. He toured and recorded with Roy Roberts through much of the U.S. and Europe and has played and/or recorded with artists such as; Taj Mahal, Floyd Miles (featuring Gregg Allman), Skeeter Brandon, Priscilla Price, Chick Willis, Sandra Hall, D.C. Bellamy, Tom Browne, William
Bell and many others.
Mark has toured Italy, France, Greece and the United States as a guitar player and has worked as a session musician at Rock House Records since it began several years ago. He has incorporated much of what he has learned in the blues scene and added his own original flavor to produce his new and totally original album: Passages."
"Passages" is a CD that features Mark's guitar playing and songwriting skills as well as his love for music in general. He blends his passion and experience in Blues with his flair for R&B and Jazz to form an interesting and unique new blues sound you won't want to miss out on. A very talented and versatile artist!
