WENDELL HALL: 'Til I Run Out of Highway

Wendell Hall is a songwriter, singer, and musician that works primarily around the country genre. He does however, work with other styles such as rock and folk whether within his own compositions or when working on projects with others.

Wendell is from the small northeast Georgia town of Royston. His interest in music was fueled early on by his grandfather's banjo playing and the Christmas day jam sessions at his great grandmother's home. The classics, such as "Wildwood Flower" were played and sung along with the latest country and rockabilly hits. In addition, Wendell began looking forward to the Saturday evening block of syndicated country music shows; especially Flatt and Scruggs.

For Christmas, right after his fifth birthday, Wendell asked for a guitar. However, being too small to handle the instrument, he received a mandolin instead. It would be several years before the mandolin would be played. He then started taking piano lessons when he was 8 years old and playing sax in the school band 2 years later.

During this time the British invasion following the debut of the Beatles on American shores caught Wendell's imagination. His interest in popular and rock music has remained. More importantly, his interest was deeper than the just the music and the beat. He studied the songs he liked, finding the nuances of each tune: the special bass line, the back-up or rhythm guitar part, or the instrument or sound added for texture. This attention to detail would be of use later in Wendell's musical life. He also traded the mandolin in for a guitar and taught himself how to strum along with the songs. He later learnded to play the banjo as well.

After high school, Wendell studied art at the University of Georgia for a couple of years, and started jamming and playing in bands. He generally played rhythm guitar and keyboards and supplied much, if not all, of the harmony vocals. His attention to multi-layered vocals of both country and rock music paid off at this point.

When 22, Wendell went to the Los Angeles area intending to visit for a month or two. The stay continues. Over the years, he has played local bands, written songs, recorded an album,'Til I Run Out of Highway, and produced personal project albums for others.

Wendell is now concentrating on writing and recording songs for public consumption, in cluding a new album, Small Town Blues, a new collection of tunes with country, rock, and folk influences. Although not every song is a number 1, most could be in the right hands.
