TOXTETH: SubliminalToxteth, is the musical vehicle of producer Alvin Christie, and is actually the name of the district in Liverpool(England) where he was born. Anyone who knows anything about England will recall that this was the district which had some serious riots during the late 80's, and has always been known as a "hard" district, right through from the 50's and 60's there has been a very strong "ethnic" background and a strong mixture of musical styles, many of which found their way into the "MerseyBeat" sound, although many musicians from the period would question wether it had any effect (I know better).
It's no suprise then that my music should reflect that hardness in its outlook, and its also no secret that today Toxteth is perhaps not as wild as it once was(although it's still very edgy...), this is also reflected in the the music.
Alvin has been involved in the music industry since playing rythm guitar in British Reggae band "Dambala", who scored a No4 in the Reggae 12" charts with "Zimbabwe" and were also voted "Best British Newcomers" by Black Music and Jazz Review.
Alvin also played guitar with Regae Rock band "Inner Force" and played many, many college gigs and festivals throughout the south of England.
So the musical influences are based around Reggae/Rock, but with "House" music it is possible to mix so many different styles, so there are "deeper/darker" elements mixed in just to add to the flavour.
Alvin also spent many years in the engineers seat at several studios in and around London, where he learnt how to engineer in the old fashioned way...(Toxteth now uses mainly PC based equipment).
Recently Alvin was involved in setting up a small indie label http://www.swingswangswung.com which has at present 4 artists ranging from Pop, Reggae to House music. Toxteth has just finished producing an EP for young Norwegian artist Susanne Salomonsen
Alvin now lives and works out of (sunny...:-))Oslo, Norway.
