CHARISSE LOWE KAHLER: Fountain Street
Fountain Street is the second CD from singer-songwriter Charisse Lowe. The majority of these songs were written during Charisse's 4 years in Wichita, KS, and the CD takes its name from her old address there.
Fountain Street is stripped down and 'low-tech' compared to her first CD "Places I've Been...People I've Known". Recorded in her living room by friend and fellow musician Larry McDoniel of Derby, KS, these first takes are representative of Charisse's live performances. The CD was originally recorded for copyright purposes, but Charisse and Larry received so much favorable feedback on copies given to friends and family that the decision was made to offer them commercially. This 15 song CD covers blues, gospel, contemporary folk, country, and even a little acoustic rock.
The Songs:
Opener, Be The One, is an up-tempo, open rocker that will have you tapping your feet within the first couple of notes! All About the Rush is a blues number that Charisse sometimes calls the Bitter Woman Blues. It debuted at a blues festival in Kansas, and all the women in the audience could be heard yelling, "tell it, girl", "you know it", and, uh, other sisterly advice... Surrender sings of giving in to love. Only Ash Remains is a true country weeper, hang your head in that beer mug. What Makes a Heart questions the whys and hows of love lost. All She Ever Wanted is another up-tempo number that nails the feeling of living on the outside. Moving Away is the true story of a dear friend. Newbury's Gift was written about the late songwriter Mickey Newbury and his influence on Charisse. Windowsills is a very early and beautifully imaged tune that has been compared to early Joni Mitchell. He's Gone to Tucson details love unrecognized and almost lost. Good As New ironically recounts damage done to the spirit. Storm Season, powerful and powerfully sung is a song about the love of God for his children. Life Road Blues, a song on the first CD is reprised here as originally written - a Delta blues/gospel tune that will send shivers up your spine. Steve Kahler expertly handles the guitar duties on this one, and lets Charisse just wail. The song "Jesus Loves You" was written the day after 9/ll, and was based on something that Charisse experienced. A moving piece, it tells an old story in a new and fresh way. This song won the song showcase at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in September of 2003. The CD rounds out with a spirited bluegrass tune called Drive To You that tells the story of missing someone, jumping in the car and heading their way.
Fountain Street is a great journey in songwriting - take the trip!.
