Here's a facinating young foursome matching the electric guitar of imaginative Matt Stevens with the elegant alto sax of Emilio Reyes Leblanc and powered by the racing Montreal-made engine of bass Zack Lober and drummer Jim Doxas. There's often a mystical air about the playing, but when they're hustling on the nine tunes (all penned by the leaders), the drive and quicksilver ideas deliver real substance, as on "Real Life Stories", "Tax Collector", and the whirling "skin." The title piece has Reyes softly lyrical before resorting to spiky invention and throughout you can hear why Stevens intends to persue his career in New York.
