INDIGO: Shades Of Indigo - The Gift
The cover's night view of the New York City skyline and one of the bridges to Manhattan is evocative of the urban based jazz within. Tastefully and artfully done. The feel of this CD is late 60's-70's retro jazz.

What distinguishes "The Gift" form the seemingly endless stream of sound-alike smooth jazz albums can be summed up in one word: Indigo. She's the vocalist who makes the album stand at least somewhat apart from the pack despite a lot of familiar tunes and grooves.
Modestly produced, the disc features Indigo interpreting a collection of her favorite ballads in ways that are alternately funky ("What You Won't Do for Love"), sultry (It's Raining Outside") and tender (Killing Me Softly"). One gets the impression that this is the singer's own personal hit parade, but more often than not her interpretations radiate warmth and lyricism as well as affection. Saxophonist Antonio Parker's contributions help to enhance the sharply contrasting mood at times, and he joins guitarist Tom Newman in creating a particularly flattering acoustic backdrop for Indigo's thoughtful interpretation of "Here's That Rainy Day." Newman's electric guitar work is also big plus on another pop staple, "My Funny Valentine."
