BIOGRAPHY
Geovanni Arencibia expresses his Afro/Cuban Rhythms through vibrant energy that embraces the human soul and awakens the unconscious spirit of brotherhood. Geovanni shares this with his audience in every performance because he feels that music is a universal language and therefore, can be communicated and understood by all.
Geovanni was born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. He was introduced to the "traditional music" by his uncle, Tito Arencibia. His uncle was an accomplished "Cuban tambolero" and experienced musician. He taught Geovanni the basic of music theory and the value of a "tambor". The sparks of his first experiences were displayed in Geovanni's excitement for music. However, he quickly discovered the limits of its traditional form and wanted more.
In 1965, he moved to Miami, Florida. He continued his music studies with two of the greatest percussionist, Carlos "Patato" Valdes and Juan Candela. He listened to other rhythms such as music of The Beatles, Carlos Santana, Fania All. He continued to grow by studying with Eduardo Monroe and absorbing Jonh Coltrane, Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, Charlie Parker, Art Blakey, B.B. King, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Herbie Hancock. Eduardo Monroe then hire Geovanni to keep time for The Monroe Quintet.
In 1973 Geovanni moved to New York City. The Alba Rosa Quintet hired him as their percussionist. It was a steady gig. Geovanni settled into the New York music scene by performing with top Latin and Jazz groups such as: Charanga Casino, Ilusion Orchestra, Celia Cruz, Carlos "Patato" Valdes, Hilton Ruiz, The Brawner Brothers, Jose Fajardo (Cuban Flutist), Andy Harlow Orchestra, Meme Solis, Marco Rizo, Marlene Burke, Maggie Carles, Jimmy Vivino, Felix Cabrera & The Habana Jam, The Tropicana Jazz Band, Cubarama Afro/Cuban Jazz, Rudy Calzado, KJ Denhert & The NY Unit, Son de la Loma, Peter Vitalone & The Seeds, Luis Frank & Los Soneros de Verdad, Joe TAino & The Blue Flame and The Line Drive Orchestra.
In 1988 Geovanni Arencibia put together his Afro/Cuban Jazz quintet and has been performing in and out the tri-state area aver since. During his music career he has also made his way to several jazz festival such as: The Kool Jazz Festival, The Hennesy Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Orange Jazz Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival, Curacao International Jazz Festival, Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, Festival d'ete de Quebec, The Athens Jazz Festival (Night of the Euro), The New Jersey Performing Art Center (Sound of the City)
He has also appeared of Univision Channel 23 Miami, Florida, MTV New York, The Jazz Corner Channel 38 New York, LB TV., Univision Channel 41 New Jersey, ABC Channel 7 New York.
