BARRY TAVLIN: Family AlbumThe best part of this collection of songs is that I actually got to turn it into this CD.
Over the years, I've taken time out to write songs as gifts for members of my family, for special moments in their lives, and I would sing the song in their honor at their celebration.
The first song was written over 25 years ago for my grandmother's 90th birthday when I was a student in college. And the last one was done just this year as I sent my own son off to college. Some things are easier to sing than to say.
The making of this CD has turned out to be a gift to myself. I'd forgotten how much I love music.
Like most people nowadays, I grew up with a radio at my ear. And to this day, wherever I go, music is not far away. Even as I write these notes, the music is playing. I don't know what does it, or how, but when the sound is right, it can take me away.
I find that music speaks in a way that words often can't. So it was pure pleasure to take my own songs, get some great musicians, and bring it all together like we did.
In a way, collecting and arranging these songs has been a lot like leafing through an old photo album. I got to relive my own history and trace my own evolution over the years.
I'm the passionate activist of the 60's and 70's, I'm the young man trying to raise a family and do the right thing in the 80's and 90's. It's all there in the music.
These songs are different from a lot of what you hear today. Listen -- they're talking to you.
